Posted: January 24, 2020 |
Great Britain has a great sporting tradition and several iconic sporting events take place in the country every year. This means that if you are a sports fan then there are a huge number of reasons that you might want to take a trip to Great Britain. 2020 is set to be a scintillating year in the sports calendar for Great Britain so we check out what sport events you can expect to see if you visit. Wimbledon This is one of the highlights of the world Tennis calendar and all eyes turn on the South London venue each year as the best players in the world take part in the tournament. Popular players in both the women’s game and the men’s game take part in this, so expect to see stars like the Williams sisters, Nadal and Federer take part. The English story will be centred around Andy Murray as he is still recovering from surgery and so it is still currently unknown whether he will take part in the Men’s Singles competition. He is the last British player (he comes from Scotland) to win the tournament, and so hopes are high. However, given that he recently pulled out of the Australian Open, then it might mean he won’t compete. The tournament takes place from 29th June to 12th July. The London Marathon For long-distance runners, these 26.2 miles around the UK capital is one of the biggest races in the calendar year. The event is pretty much one big party in the UK as a wide variety of runners take part. These range from keen amateurs who are running for charity, through to those looking to make completing the run a tick on their bucket list. Eyes will be on the professionals though. After UK top runner Mo Farah has stated that he will not compete in the event in order to focus on the 10,000m at the Tokyo Olympics later in the year, then focus will shift to the Kenyan duo that took the top spots last year, and see if they can retain their titles from last year. The race takes place on Sunday 26th April. The Grand National This is the biggest horse racing event that takes place in the country and is held in April every year. Last year was a historic one as Tiger Roll won his second consecutive Grand National race. There is a chance he will also compete again this year. He is still in fine form and if he manages to pull off a third consecutive win this will be the first time ever in the 180-year history of the race. However, we will have to wait until after the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March to know whether he is likely to make the trip to Aintree. The race will take place at Aintree in Liverpool on 4th April. Euro 2020 and Other Football Events One of the biggest football events is taking place in Great Britain this year. The Euro 2020 tournament happens once every 4 years and sees 24 of the greatest teams in Europe take part. With the host Nation, England, in current good form then all eyes will be on this tournament as they try and stake their claim as one of the best teams in Europe. Maybe this will be the year that ‘football comes home’ as they say. There is always a party atmosphere in the country when England are playing in any international competition and the fact that it is on home soil with the final taking place at the iconic Wembley stadium, then this should be a fun time. Alongside this tournament there is the usual raft of domestic games that take place the country until May, with the new season starting in August. You will also get the FA Cup finals for both the men’s game and the increasingly popular women’s game in May. Other Sporting Events As well as the big ones mentioned above, there are numerous Rugby Tournaments taking place such as the Six Nations Tournament and the Rugby Ashes which is returning to the UK for the first time in several years. If you like a slightly more relaxed competition then there are numerous cricket events, such as the West Indies Test taking the place, as well as the Open golf tournament which will feature some of the best players in the world compete for the title. All in all the UK is a sport place to look out for.
